About the author:
WITOLD URBANOWICZ (1908–1996) A World War II hero, Commander of the famous No 303 Squadron which won high deserts in the Battle of Britain and became a legend for the Polish people, he ranks second on the list of Polish fighter pilots, and one of the top ten pilots of the Allied Forces who fought in the Battle of Britain, with the score of 15 confirmed and 2 probable kills. “To me Colonel Urbanowicz was like a swami [a Hindu master],” confessed one of the American pilots of the No 75 Squadron. “It was unbelievable how many details of a battle he was able to relate afterwards. He saw everything that happened, what each of us was doing.”
In 1946 he returned to Poland and was arrested by the communist security service. On release he left the country and settled with his family in New York. He worked for the American aircraft industry until 1994. In 1991 he visited Poland for the first time since emigration, and four years later was promoted to General of the Polish Air Force by President Lech Wałęsa.
