The story is set in the grotesque times of the Communist regime, in the late 1970s in the city of Sopot, where the main protagonist, Aleksander Pająk lives. His activities extend beyond Sopot and embrace the entire seashore. Pająk is the leader of a gang involved in illegal currency exchange, thefts, the black market, and pimping. We get to know him since he was a child, his entire path up to when he became a gangster. The police (MO) is conducting an investigation against Pająk. One of them, the policewoman Danusia, clearly has a soft spot for the suspect. One day, the police receives a mysterious telegram, in which high state officials order them to drop the case. Strangely enough, the same day somebody attempts to murder Pająk.
After the protagonist recuperates, he has to leave the city and he moves to Berlin where he begins organising a Polish gang involved in car thefts, murders etc. He comes back to Poland in the early 1980s, in a time of political change in Poland…
